The City of Athens, Tennessee is searching for its next city manager.. The city has a population of over 14,000 residents, a full-time workforce of 122 employees, and
encompasses 15 square miles. It is a full-service city, with multiple successful industrial parks with site expansion available, a university, a technical college, and an engaged citizenry. The city’s general fund
budget is approximately $19.5 million.
The city manager reports to a five member council that is elected to four year staggered terms and meets twice a month. The salary for the position will be determined based on qualifications and experience. The
city offers an excellent benefits package.
A bachelor’s degree in public or business administration or a Master of Public Administration degree is preferred. Three to five years of public management within local government is preferred, at least ten
years is ideal. An equivalent combination of education and experience in related fields that meet the requirements for the position will be considered.
The city is seeking a skilled and engaging servant leader with a high level of internal motivation, interpersonal skills, financial expertise, leadership abilities, economic development skills, knowledge of
intergovernmental relations, and a strong desire to serve the public. The successful candidate will be able to work collaboratively with elected officials, staff, and stakeholders to provide services that are desirable to our citizens and guests.
The candidate chosen will be required to establish residency within the Athens, TN, city limits within 12 months of hire date.
